Petition: Caldwell County, revoke fake “state of disaster” resolution!

Caldwell County: Revoke fake “state of disaster” resolution!

The residents of Caldwell County deserve to be treated fairly with policies that aren't driven by fear-mongering. Caldwell County's 2022 “state of disaster” resolution spreads harmful falsehoods about immigrants, wrongly linking them to crime and disease, and creating a risk of violence.

Caldwell County Commissioners must revoke this dangerous and misleading resolution, as residents have already pointed out that no real disaster exists. We urge the Commissioners to stop fueling divisive rhetoric by voting to revoke the resolution.

More information:

In December of 2022, Caldwell County Commissioners Court passed a resolution declaring a "state of disaster" citing false and dangerous claims that immigrants are prone to committing crime & spreading contagious disease. The language in Resolution 3-2023 is plagued with rhetoric that dehumanizes migrants and parrots the state language of an “invasion” at our southern border. This resolution not only parrots dangerous and reckless rhetoric; this language could open the door to invite violence towards the Caldwell migrant community as such hate language tends to do.

A provision of that resolution enables the Court to revoke the Disaster Declaration at will and so on September 24th; numerous residents showed up at Commissioners Court urging B.J. Westmoreland & Ed Theriot – the two Commissioners who motioned to approve the declaration, and seconded it, respectively – to end the misguided & problematic declaration.  Many residents spoke to the fact that the reality is that there is no real disaster that this resolution addresses. Others provided factual corrections to the false and dangerous claims in the resolution such as equating high numbers of migrants with higher crime rates.

Caldwell County residents deserve more than a wreckless fear mongering resolution that seeks to create division between its residents. As elected officials Commissioners are tasked with working in the best interest of ALL Caldwell residents, not just some. We ask for Commissioners to stop the hate rhetoric by voting to revoke the “state of disaster” resolution 3-2023. Caldwell County Commissioners can and should do much better than simply parroting state led hate rhetoric.
